Casual Gesture

A black and white painting has been next up in my "ideas" cue for some time. I  received an invitation from @WomenPaintersWest to enter a juried show with a social justice theme called, "The Way I See It." I immediately thought, I see it in black and white and it has to be the George Floyd murder.  When I began looking at the still images of the murder, I was chilled to the bone by the slouching, “just another day at the office” nature of Derek Chauvin's position:  looking straight at the camera, sunglasses on his head, and hand in his pocket. The casualness off that gesture and the anonymous powerlessness of George Floyd trying to lift his face from the asphalt is now imprinted our psyche.* So I knew I HAD to make it a black and white, gestural painting. It's called Casual Gesture. 

* Psyche is the Greek word for soul (see the next piece in the series).
